Risk of Legionella in Hydrotherapy Tubs
Hydrotherapy tubs in hospitals are particularly susceptible to Legionella contamination, as demonstrated by a study on minimizing Legionella risks in therapeutic tubs conducted at the Hospices Civils de Lyon (HCL).
Hydrotherapy tubs provide an ideal habitat for legionella
Due to their design, hydrotherapy tubs are difficult to clean and operate at moderate temperatures (approximately 43°C), which promotes the proliferation of Legionella. Additionally, the irregular use of these tubs further increases the risk.
Study confirms high legionella contamination
The study found high concentrations of Legionella in both examined tub models, particularly Legionella pneumophila and Legionella anisa. The "Rhapsody" model showed contamination levels of up to 15,000 CFU/L (colony-forming units per liter), while the "GK Relax" model had levels of up to 5,000 CFU/L.
Infection risk control measures were unsuccessful
Several technical measures were implemented, but they failed to effectively control the risk of Legionella infection. As a result, restrictions on the use of therapeutic tubs were introduced based on the study's findings.
Measures to reduce the risk of legionella
Starting in 2023, the clinic implemented a quarterly maintenance plan that includes the systematic replacement of showerheads and hoses, as well as chlorine disinfection of the tubs. Additionally, an annual microbiological sampling is now conducted.
