Safe Water Project Tanzania
Providing safe drinking water to more than 9,000 people every day.
Clean drinking water is still not a given for millions of people worldwide. In Lower Moshi, a region south of Mount Kilimanjaro in Tanzania, many communities and schools face the challenge of providing their populations with hygienically safe drinking water. Together with our partner Element15, Aqua free is supporting a sustainable drinking water project that improves access to clean water and reduces the health risks posed by contaminated water sources.
The challenge
In many regions of Tanzania, water is available but often does not meet the standards for safe drinking water.
The biggest challenges include:
- Microbiological contamination from bacteria and other pathogens
- Diarrhoeal diseases caused by contaminated water
- Elevated fluoride concentrations with health consequences such as dental fluorosis
- Lack of or unreliable electricity supply
- Limited technical infrastructure in rural areas
A robust and easy-to-operate solution was therefore required for the affected communities.
The partnership
The collaboration between Element15 and Aqua free arose from the search for a suitable filtration technology for regions with limited infrastructure. Together, they developed a membrane filter specifically tailored to local requirements. The aim was to provide a solution that works reliably, is easy to transport and can be operated independently of a power supply.
Today, the project is being successfully implemented not only in Tanzania but also in Ghana.
The solution: The BAR Filtration System

The BAR Filtration System is a mobile water treatment unit housed in a portable casing that can be used directly on site. The system can be connected to existing water sources or operated using a foot pump or a solar-powered pump.
Multi-stage filtration
- Pre-filtration to remove coarse particles
- Aqua free membrane technology for removing microbiological contaminants
- Activated carbon filtration to improve water quality

Aqua free’s membrane technology forms the central element of the system.
It enables the reliable removal of:
- Bacteria
- Viruses
- Parasites
- Other microbiological contaminants
At the same time, it offers high flow rates and a robust design for use in demanding conditions
