Dental

In the framework of dental treatment, in particular when it comes to patients at risk of infection and those with weakened immune systems, it is necessary that the provision of germ-free cooling water and industrial water be guaranteed by dental units. However, the heating up of the water in the unit as well as long periods of stagnation of the cooling water overnight and at weekends can lead to build-ups in bacteria. With therapy measures using water-cooling there is a danger that germ-containing aerosols will be inhaled by patients and staff and cause infections.
For this reason, the Robert Koch Institute (RKI) demands compliance with the internationally established recommended value of ≤1 CFU/ml for Legionella in the cooling water of dental units. According to the guidelines of the RKI, water is to be used which must be free of Pseudomona, Cryptosporidia and Legionella when treating patients with immunosuppression. However, the effective sanitation measures for contaminated units using thermal or chemical disinfection is extremely difficult due to the existence of wall-adhering layers of biofilm. Additionally, the effects on both the patients and the materials of the dental unit are to be taken into account when using chemical disinfectants.
In order to maintain the required microbiological quality of water, including bacterial count limits in the cooling water and process water of dental units, membrane filtration must be used to provide a safe barrier for protecting against water-based germs.
